Col du Pourtalet – 1,794m

Location: D934/A136 Laruns to Biescas (35 miles)

Coordinates: 42.8058088,-0.4185108

Ridden: 2007 & 2011

The D934, on the French side, and the A136, on the Spanish side link Laruns in France with Biescas in Spain, where you can turn off onto the famous N260 which takes you all the way to Andorra. The Pourtalet is a very good biking road on both ramps although it’s probably more challenging and interesting on the French side. The Spanish side is wide and well surfaced but designed for coaches to easily carry skiers up to the ski resort of Formigal.

There are plenty of cafes and restaurants at the top to enjoy a break and the views are quite spectacular – not quite at the Col du Tourmalet end of the scale but very pleasant nonetheless. Highly recommended.
